Dr. J. Hareendran Nair (MD Pankajakasthuri Group) has been conferred Padmasree Award 2012, the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India, after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan. It is awarded to him to recognize his distinguished contribution towards the emergence of Ayurveda as a popular system of medicine in India. He is well known for his efforts to promote and preserve one of the oldest forms of medicine existing in the world.

CNN-IBN Reports-Pankajakasthuri's Padheyam, a helping hand in Feeding Thousands - Katakada (Kerala): Providing free lunch for a thousand people is a prospect many people would shy away from. However, the Pankajakasthuri Ayurveda Hospital in Katakada in Thiruvanthapuram is doing just that, everyday of the year. During noontime, the residents gather to have a sumptuous lunch at the hospital's eating joint Padheyam. "Even if it is free food, it is of very high quality. We now hope that God will give Pankajakasthuri a chance to continue this forever so that people like me don't go empty stomach even for a day," says a resident, Aboobecker. The moment the clock strikes noon, children from nearby schools will be the first ones to queue up for lunch. Rich, poor, Hindus, Muslims, the young and the old, they all share a common table and a common menu at Padheyam. So why is the hospital feeding so many mouths, without charging a single penny? "I started this in April 2006 on my mother's birthday. It is said in Ayurveda that we should give something back to the society," says Managing Director, Pankajakasthuri Herbals Pvt. Ltd, Dr. J. Hareendran Nair. Figures show that people close to 25, 000 came to the joint for free lunch in January 2007 alone. And it takes 150 kilos of rice and 50 kilos of vegetables, just to make a single day's lunch. Having started this noble concept, the key for Pankajakasthuri is to sustain this effort. And perhaps the biggest challenge is for the housewives of the area, because if it gets wound up then they will have to light fire in their kitchens once again.

Thiruvananthapuram Nov 2005 - Honourable Chief Minister Shri Ommen Chandy unveiled Harmony - ayurvedic massage - based wellness and rejuvenation services. Harmony, the company's brand of ayurvedic massage - based wellness and rejuvenation treatments has been unveiled by Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri Ommen Chandy. Tourism Minister Shri Venu Gopal, Dr. J. Hareendran Nair, Managing Director, Pankajakasthuri Herbals India Pvt Ltd, Mr K. C. Chandrahasan, Managing Director, Kerala Travels, Mr. M. Gopa Kumaran Nair, General Manager, Pankajakasthuri Herbals India Pvt Ltd were also present on the occasion. Globally, the acceptance of ayurveda has been increasing over the past few years. However, quality issues and the lack of professionalism have had a negative impact on ayurveda's development. The launch of the Harmony and Panacea brands is part of an effort to dispel negative impressions about ayurveda and establish a benchmark for the industry. Both brands have been developed based on strict ayurveda treatment protocols. Targeted at spas and high-end hotels across the world, the Harmony offers readymade ayurvedic rejuvenation therapies carried out by specially trained masseurs under the supervision of ayurveda physicians. Over a hundred masseurs are currently in the final stages of an intensive 10-month training programme in Thiruvananthapuram. Besides a thorough grounding in various aspects of ayurvedic massage, the masseurs are also learning yoga, spoken English and other `soft skills'. The company currently plans two business models for the Harmony brand. Clients can either choose to hire trained masseurs and ayurveda doctors from the company or can hire the company to set up and manage the ayurveda wellness spa. Services under the Harmony brand can either be an add-on to an existing spa or can be offered as an independent spa at a hotel or resort. In India, the Harmony brand will soon be launched at a resort in Goa, while its international debut will be at hotels in Maldives and Mauritius. The plan is to have the Harmony brand in 100 hotels and resorts across the world by March 2007. For its Panacea brand of ayurvedic therapies, the company plans to target individuals in the UK, Germany, Italy and West Asia.

This business empire was born in a small clinic in Poovachal, a rural area south of Thiruvananthapuram. It came as a healing touch for the predominantly agrarian region and laid the foundation of a young Ayurveda physician’s ambition to do something for the people in his home town. The clinic still exists. In addition, there is a flourishing business, an Ayurveda hospital and colleges, all in Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram district. In the meantime, the Ayurveda physician – J. Hareendran Nair of Pankajakasthuri fame – (no prizes for guessing right) also added a Padma Shri to his name. But he still does not breathe easy. He aims high and feels that there is much more that he should be doing to make people aware of the benefits of indigenous systems of medicine and plants with medicinal values.

“I feel blessed to have been able to reach this far. Mistakes were many since I come from a family with no kind of business background. So I had to learn through trial and error and I am still learning,” says Hareendran, managing director, Pankajakasthuri Herbals India.
